University Sponsorship Programme Update 2015

The Scholarship Program for Central and Eastern Europe has been developed to participate in a constructive, professional and committed manner in the efforts of individuals and institutions to realize objectives for the common good. The program is aiming to support highly skilled students in their academic and professional training and also to assist them in their intellectual and spiritual growth. It is an academic post-graduate scholarship program for Christian laity and religious empowering them to assume a prospective leadership role within and outside the Catholic institutional context. It aims at innovative and creative academically trained people with professional competence and willingness to take responsibility in Church and society. Thus, the program has a clear leadership component.

Goals of the program are:

  • – to develop skills of leadership,
  • – to strengthen trans-disciplinary exchange and
  • – to intensify international cooperation and cross-cultural dialogue.

Two Albanian students have been sponsored to study a Masters degree abroad since this programme was offered by MWL who ensured that the application and the fulfillment of the requirements from the donors was fulfilled. We are pleased to say that our first sponsorship was a great success.

Brikena Petritaj successfully gained a place at Durham University in the UK and achieved a credit in her Masters in TESOL. She stayed with a past pupil of Loreto, Manchester, Dr Mary McHugh, who supported her throughout the year of studies. She was one of the top students of her class. Congratulations Brikena. Brikena now has a successful Job teaching English at a college in Tirana and has been chosen to be one of the teachers to teach teachers. This is great success.

The second sponsorship was gained by Sara Capaliku. She has just successfully completed her Masters in International Studies at Bremen University and we await her results. Sara achieved a scholarship whilst in Germany to conduct a research project with film regarding the needs of Youth in Albania. Congratulations to Sara on a project successfully completed, during this time at a Vocational School in Albania. Sara will return from Germany on September 30th and will begin employment with MWL, in the Mary Ward Loreto Youth Project, on November 1st. MWL is happy to continue to support this programme for young people under the age of 30 years. It is a wonderful opportunity.
