MWL Leadership’s Group, in the framework of their commitment towards social responsibility in their community, have successfully accomplished two of the activities from their “Social Actions Agenda”. The idea of this Agenda is to engage the future community leaders in a step-by-step, “learning-by- doing” process of taking initiatives to improve life around them, with little actions, but big in their hearts. The first one took place on March 17, 2017 and consisted in organizing an afternoon dedicated to the entertainment of children in the community, through the animation of Leadership Group members. A group of 4 members was in charge of leading this event, sharing responsibilities with the rest of the group. This idea came as a result of identifying the lack of activities which would encourage the bringing together of children from two different villages. The purpose of this day was to have a good time together in a creative space, where they could release their positive energy and share their artistic talents. The activity was characterised by lots of dynamism, colourful theme paintings, young energy, fun group games, music, dancing and socialising. It was the first “test” and it was very successfully handled by the Group. The second round of action was the implementation of one of the sub-groups’ idea. This time the Leadership Group focused their efforts on identifying a family living within their community, in poor conditions and to collect food and clothing for them. On the 21st of April, with the help of the Church in Lagje Mirdita, the contributions of the community and the Group members themselves, managed to gather 6 bags filled with food supplies, socks and underwear for the family. The identification process had taken place during a two week period before finding the supplies. The aim of it was finalised last Friday, in one of the most vulnerable areas outside Durres, known as the area of “Keneta”. It is called so because it is built over and around an existing marsh. It was a very moving event for the Group and an inspirational gesture for their whole community, taking into account the daily troubles and struggles they continuously have to fight with.

Albania is surrounded by mountains which cover 60% of its surface and which wondrously embrace the landscape no matter where you travel. Whilst writing the next 5 year strategic plan, MWL staff went to Mount Dajti which remained our home for the week. It was an awesome experience driving higher and higher to this place, sensing the power of these naturally immense and mighty structures enveloping the landscape. How many reflective people choose this place to be silent, to stop and gaze and wonder and stare? Our plans emerged during the time we spent in the midst of such beauty and such majesty. We climbed and walked around, stood and gazed with wonder; we experienced ice storms, snow and rain, cold, heat and sun, all in one week. Did it make us stop and stare? We like to think that the creativity and dreams realized were the fruit of such wonder!
The following stories, events, trainings and activities say a little of what went before this event and we hope you have the time to stop and listen and wonder a little at the courage of many.
Wishing you all a very Happy Easter!

Mary Ward Loreto Foundation and the Ministry of Education and Sports Organizes the Launching of the Research: “Ethics in the Education System in Albania”
Date: 13 April 2017, Place: Hotel Tirana International, Time: 10:00 – 13:00, (Registrations start at 9:30, lunch will follow)
Young people need to gain from their education experience a social and moral awareness in order to thrive in our society. It is essential to prepare young people for our shared democratic life. It is the job of the education system to prepare our young people for the challenges and opportunities of a changing world. Such values are not only taught but need to be demonstrated by all actors in the life of a school. The prevalence of unethical behaviour in schools has never been measured before in Albania. Mary Ward Loreto Foundation, in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Sports, initiated a nationwide research in all levels of education, from preschool to Master’s level, in order to measure the severity and frequency of unethical behaviour. This research was conducted by a highly academic team of ACER led by Dr. Zef Preci, using a mixed methodology with a representative sampling for each level of education nationwide.
As an important actor in education in Albania, your voice would add value and increase awareness of this situation. Your voice would induce tailored, systemic measures of interventions, bringing to the table issues, which you consider important, in the education of young citizens in Albania. Should you be interested to participate, please contact us: Email: email@example.com, Tel: +35544500388
The event organized from Mary Ward Loreto Foundation in Albania “Mary Ward’s Hope for Women” “Women in time to come, will do much…”
With more than 4 years of experience working in rural and isolated areas of Albania, Mary Ward Loreto Foundation is implementing The MWL Women Project, enabling the social and economic empowerment of women and girls. The project is implemented in 6 regions in Albania and helps women to get the necessary resources, rights and opportunities to ensure their escape from vulnerability, in its aim to prevent the risk against trafficking in persons. The documentary, together with an exhibition of Women’s handmade crafts and souvenir, was available to the public on Tuesday, March 28th 2017, from 09.30 – 13.00, at Tirana International Hotel, in an event that MWL has prepared on behalf of its Women’s Project, for celebrating the women in Albania. The struggles, efforts and results of the work undertaken by these women to get out of their vulnerable situation, are remarkable. In their efforts to escape their poor status, women make continuously, handmade crafts and souvenirs, with the hope to make some profit. MWL has made an appealing documentary to tell their story; the story of 4 incredibly courageous women who are making the change and is a model for their friends to follow. The event’s programme was outlined in a way that provided the participants with a holistic experience leaving a lasting impact. It was impressive to hear this side of the Albanian women’s story from the disadvantaged areas and their efforts to become empowered. They spoke about their concerns, their gratitude for the support given to them, and their hopes and wishes for the future. They expressed these changes whilst trembling with emotion. It was very inspiring.
“We need you to stay and live among us, to be there and to hear our voice, to help us, support us and to see among us the change happening every day. We believe that we are on the right path to our empowerment and we are aware that the obstacles are challenging. We remain in hope that we can serve as good models for other women of our community and especially of our daughters; not only for our successes but also for our history and those rights that were taken from us. We haven’t had the possibility of education, because we’ve been forced to get married at a young age. Our daughters deserve a different future, a better and a dignifying one.” – said one of the women of the village in Hot I Ri.
Listening to these wonderful women, I couldn’t but think of Mary Ward’s saying: “In time to come women will do much”. The future is uncertain for everyone; especially in Albania, but “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” said Eleanor Roosevelt.
